Chester's New Competitive Socialising Venue
Spinners arrived on Frodsham Street on 27 March 2026 with a £1 million transformation of the former Poundland unit — and nothing about it is understated. Where once Chester's most mundane shop stood, there is now a cavernous, designed-to-the-nines playground of competitive games, theatrical cocktails, artisan pizza and the kind of atmospheric lighting that makes everyone look slightly better than they deserve.
The Chester venue is Spinners' fourth UK location, following outposts in Reading, Plymouth and Solihull. It is the brand's own self-described best yet — and having visited in its first weeks, there is evidence to support that claim, alongside a few teething notes that early guests have been forthright about sharing.
Six Ways to Play
Spinners' game lineup puts a modern, competitive spin on classic pub games. Each activity is designed for groups rather than solo players, with a strong social dynamic built into how the games are laid out. The venue's standout is Clay Shop — virtual clay shooting developed in collaboration with an Olympic clay shooter, reportedly the most realistic simulation of its kind in a hospitality setting.
"There isn't anything too similar to it in Chester. It's something new and exciting for the city — I think Chester has been crying out for this."
— Jamie Bylett, Founder & CEO, Spinners UKCocktails, Pizza & The QR Code Problem
The food and drink offering is confident: hand-crafted cocktails, artisan pizzas, burgers and loaded sides all ordered via QR code at the table. In theory this is frictionless. In the opening weeks, however, it has been a source of the most consistent guest friction — with drinks reportedly taking over 30 minutes and food up to 40 minutes to arrive on the first full opening weekend.
Management have been transparent about this, acknowledging it as a natural consequence of an unexpectedly busy launch. The cocktail menu itself has drawn praise where drinks have arrived promptly — the range is well-conceived and priced fairly for a specialist games venue. Early visitors noted that the beer quality needed work in the first days, though this is typically a new-pipes issue that resolves quickly.
One minor but meaningful operational note: session timings are firm. Visitors who were still eating when their session ended reported being asked to move — an uncomfortable experience worth being prepared for. Booking with comfortable food lead time is advisable.
Our Assessment
The disparity between the games experience and the food service is the defining feature of Spinners Chester in its early weeks. The venue succeeds completely at what it was designed for — creating a fun, high-energy, competitive environment where groups have a genuinely good time. The operational rough edges around ordering and session management are solvable problems, and Spinners' management team have responded to every early review with visible willingness to improve.
What Early Guests Said
Popped in and had a fantastic experience. Staff were really friendly and welcoming. Played clay shooting — so much fun. Will absolutely be back with friends.
Clay Shooting · Solo VisitPre-booked the laser shooting with my daughter — staff were very friendly and explained everything well. The game itself was great fun. The downside was ordering via QR code: drinks took over 30 minutes, food 40 minutes. We were still eating when our next booking arrived and had to find somewhere else to finish. These feel like opening-weekend teething issues — will definitely give it another go.
Family · Laser Shooting · Opening WeekendThe beer quality wasn't great — looked like apple juice, likely new-pipes issues. We got bored of the clay shooting after around 10 minutes and asked to swap to darts. We were told we would need to pay another £30. It was completely empty on a Tuesday night and a bit of flexibility would have gone a long way. Front-of-house staff were genuinely friendly — it's the policy that let us down, not the people. A shame for a brand-new venue.
Friends Group · Clay Shooting · WeeknightWanted to try the Sunday Funday deal (£10 a game including pizza) but the leaflet doesn't make clear it's only valid for groups of three or more. As a couple we paid full price — £30 for 55 minutes of clay shooting without pizza. The venue looks amazing and the staff are friendly, but 55 minutes of clay shooting does become repetitive after about 20 minutes. Better suited to groups. The Sunday deal advertising needs to be clearer about minimum numbers.
